Rep. Schweizer Passes Workforce Resolution out of Committee, Calling on Congress to Maintain Job Training Funding

Rep. Schweizer testifying in committee.

SPRINGFIELD, IL… State Representative Brandun Schweizer (R-Danville) passed his workforce training resolution unanimously out of the House Labor and Commerce Committee on Wednesday.

House Resolution 723 calls on Congress to stop funding cuts to the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOAs). WIOAs are federally funded programs that provide workforce training through a variety of statewide and local programs.

WIOAs prioritize helping individuals such as veterans, low income individuals, individuals with disabilities, homeless individuals, and long-term unemployed individuals to receive job training to reenter the workforce by helping job seekers sharpen their resume and interviewing skills and connecting them with services such as GED classes to get the help they need.

“Earlier this year, a major employer in my district announced its closure, which has laid off over 500 people. Programs like this give those individuals a way to receive job training at no cost to them,” said Rep. Schweizer. “With the current state of the program, these individuals will not be able to get the help they need to get back into the workforce. My resolution calls on the Federal government to revise their plan on budget cuts to programs as influential as these,” concluded Rep. Schweizer.

The resolution now heads to the House Floor for consideration of adoption. For more information, visit the Illinois General Assembly website.
