Schweizer Against Passage of HB 2827 out of Committee, Stands Firm for Homeschool Freedom

SPRINGFIELD, IL… State Representative Brandun Schweizer (R-Danville) issued the following release after HB 2827, a bill that greatly increases regulations on homeschool families, passed the House Education Policy Committee 8-4-1, with all Republicans opposed to the legislation.

HB 2827 makes changes to homeschool policy and mandates that non-public elementary and secondary schools register annually with the Illinois State Board of Education. Also, the Homeschool Act requires homeschools to fill out a Homeschool Declaration Form or risk truancy, fines, and even imprisonment.

“The decision made to move HB 2827 through committee is a disservice to our homeschooling and non-public school students here in Illinois, as they have been vocal about their opposition to the legislation,” said Rep. Schweizer. “The passage of this legislation through the Education Policy Committee, despite over 41,000 opposition slips and no bipartisan support, shows just how slippery of a slope it is from regulations to making homeschooling an impossible option here in Illinois. I will continue to stand for Homeschool Freedom to ensure all students get the opportunity to succeed, no matter how they learn and that parents are included in their child’s education.”
