SPRINGFIELD, IL… State Representative Brandun Schweizer (R-Danville) announced the passage of SB 1723, a measure to protect the Mahomet Aquifer, out of both the House and Senate. Rep. Schweizer is the Chief Co-Sponsor of the legislation and Rep. Carol Ammons is the Chief House Sponsor of the bill.
SB 1723 bans carbon sequestration in any sequestration facility that overlies, underlies, or passes through a sole-source aquifer, like the Mahomet Aquifer, and creates the Mahomet Aquifer Study Commission, to study and review the safety of carbon capture and storage under the Mahomet Aquifer.
“I applaud Rep. Ammons, Sen. Faraci, and Sen. Rose for their tremendous work on this legislation,” said Rep. Schweizer. “Although the Mahomet Aquifer is local to central Illinois, not protecting it will result in a problem for the entire state, as 15 counties in central Illinois rely on it for clean water. This is an important issue and one that not only affects our districts but over 1 million people living in central Illinois.”
“I thank both my Senate and House colleagues for ensuring this measure passed. We are almost to the finish line to ensure the protection of the Mahomet Aquifer from avoidable contamination,” concluded Schweizer. “I am looking forward to the governor signing this important measure.”
