Schweizer Reacts to Signing of the FY27 Budget, Reiterates the Need for Affordability

DANVILLE, IL… State Representative Brandun Schweizer (R-Danville) issued the following statement after Governor Pritzker signed the FY27 budget into law, making it the largest enacted budget in state history. The partisan budget will spend $55.9 billion, balanced by nearly $800 million in new taxes and fees.

“It is appalling that while Illinois families are struggling to make ends meet, the Governor signed the largest budget in state history into law, claiming to be focused on affordability,” said Rep. Schweizer. “Affordability for hardworking families should not include a 3.2% pay raise for lawmakers, $410 million for immigrant support services, or $800 million in new taxes and fees that will be placed on consumers.”

Schweizer said the budget should have included an increase in funding for the Local Government Distributive Fund (LGDF) to take the pressure off local taxpayers, as well as real solutions to making Illinois an affordable and attractive place for businesses and families to settle in.

“House Republicans brought forth many legislative solutions to the very real problems plaguing our state, but Democrats consciously chose to not advance those measures, continuing policies that drive up costs and make Illinois less competitive. Affordability is not a buzzword; it should be a measurable outcome. Families should not have to pay higher taxes to support record spending, yet year after year, Democrats cement that into reality.”

Since Governor Pritzker took office, Illinois’ state spending has increased by 40%. Additionally, 57 new tax and fee increases, costing taxpayers more than $77 billion, have been enacted under the Governor’s watch.

Schweizer was a strong no vote when the budget came through the House of Representatives in the early hours of June 1.
