SOS LIBRARY GRANTS, LIHEAP APPTS OPEN, GOLD STAR MOTHER’S & FAMILY DAY AND MORE


SECRETARY OF STATE ANNOUNCES GRANTS FOR LIBRARIES ACROSS ILLINOIS

From the Office of the Secretary of State, Alexi Giannoulias:

Secretary of State and State Librarian Alexi Giannoulias awarded nearly $22 million for library services and $6 million for literacy programs throughout the state.

The grants for library services include funding to enhance online catalogues, support day-to-day operations, expand interlibrary loan programs and equip vision-impaired individuals with narrations of newspaper content. The library grants are designed to promote basic reading, math, writing, and English skills.

Of the $28 million in grants, Danville Area Community College was one of the recipients. DACC received a Literacy Grant for $70,600.


LIHEAP APPOINTMENTS OPEN ON TUESDAY, OCTOBER 1ST

CHAMPAIGN COUNTY

Starting October 1st, the Champaign County Regional Planning Commission will begin taking applications for the Low-Income Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). Households must meet one of the following criteria to apply:

  • Households with at least one member aged 60 or older
  • Households with at least one person receiving long-term disability benefits
  • Households with at least one child under age 6
  • Households that are disconnected or in Imminent Disconnect status

SOUTHVIEW UPPER ELEMENTARY VISIT

Last week, I had the opportunity to speak to the 6th grade students at Southview Elementary about careers. It was a great way to connect with students. This group of students was great, and they all have a bright future ahead of them! Thank you, Southview!


DACC CHEERLEADERS

On Thursday, I started my day at the Danville Noon Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast. I then was able to present certificates to DACC’s Co-Ed Cheerleading team for their success at cheer camp! Congratulations to those students! Way to represent!


XPO RIBBON CUTTING IN DANVILLE

I also attended XPO’s ribbon cutting in Danville. XPO is a freight transportation company. Congratulations to XPO for opening your newest location!


LIBERTY VILLAGE

I ended Thursday with a remodel open house at Liberty Village’s Hawthorne Inn in Danville. Liberty Village is a nursing home, rehabilitation facility, and senior living facility all in one! They are a great asset to our community and go above and beyond for our seniors. Congratulations to Liberty Village and thank you to all the employees that work hard to ensure Liberty Village feels like home to the residents. It was great to meet you all. A special thanks to Amy Thompson for all she does for the facility!


HALLOWEEN COSTUME DRIVE REMINDER

Just a reminder that my Halloween Costume Drive is underway!

Gently used and new costumes of any size are welcome and can be dropped off at Rep. Schweizer’s District office at 3821 N. Vermilion, Ste. 5, in Danville, at the Boys and Girls Club of Danville at Garfield Park, 850 N. Griffin St., in Danville, at the Rantoul Youth Center at 1306 Country Club Ln, in Rantoul, or at the Rantoul Recreation Department at 100 W. Flessner Ave., in Rantoul during normal business hours, Monday through Friday.

Following the collection period, a distribution night will be held to invite families to come and pick out costumes ahead of the Halloween festivities. More information regarding the distribution will follow closer to the end of the drive.
